Preventing Tooth Decay
Eating foods that are high in sugars and starches can lead to the destruction of the protective layer around the tooth called enamel. Bacteria that live in the mouth thrive on foods such as hard candy, chocolate, soda, cake, etc. When these foods are left on teeth these bacteria produce acids which destroy the enamel. To prevent tooth decay follow these simple steps:
1. Brush at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
2. Clean between your teeth using dental floss.
3. Limit the amount of sweets you eat in your diet.
4. Use supplemental fluoride treatments.
5. Visit Drs. Trunnell, McConaughy or Brummer for professional cleanings and oral examinations.
Tips and Tricks
Toothache Tips
Follow a few simple first steps to try to alleviate tooth pain. First rinse the mouth out with warm water to try and clean the area. Use dental floss to remove any debris that may be caught between teeth. Never apply aspirin or other painkiller directly to gums near aching tooth, gum tissue damage may result. If pain continues call us - Cedar Falls: (319) 266-7559 or in Waverly: (319) 352-4488.
What to do if You Break a Tooth
Rinse your mouth with warm water insure area is clean. Apply cold compresses to the area to keep swelling down, do not apply ice directly. Call Immediately - Cedar Falls: (319) 266-7559 or in Waverly: (319) 352-4488.
Tips for Sensitive Teeth
Millions of people unnecessarily endure the sharp pain of hypersensitivity. Pain is caused when the dentin, an underlying layer of the tooth, becomes exposed. This can happen at the gum line as well as the chewing surface of the tooth. Brushing incorrectly, gum disease, or unconsciously clenching/grinding your teeth can lead to hypersensitivity. Choosing a new toothbrush, brushing in a circular pattern, or using a toothpaste for sensitive teeth could help alleviate the problem. Medications are available that when applied to sensitive areas provide more permanent relief. If pain still continues come see us.

The office of Dr. Trunnell is a recognized Preferred Invisalign® Provider.
What is it?
Invisalign uses a series of invisible, removable, and comfortable aligners that no one can tell you're wearing. So, you can smile more during treatment as well as after. Invisalign is made with 3-D computer imaging technology and has been proven effective.
Why would I want it?
Not only are the aligners invisible, they are removable, so you can eat and drink what you want while in treatment. Plus, brushing and flossing are no problem. They are also comfortable, with no metal to cause mouth abrasions during treatment. And no metal and wires usually means you spend less time in your doctor's office getting adjustments. Invisalign also allows you to view your own virtual treatment plan when you start so you can see how your straight teeth will look when your treatment is complete.
How does it work?
You wear each set of aligners for about 2 weeks, removing them only to eat, drink, brush, and floss. As you replace each aligner with the next in the series, your teeth will move little by little, week by week until they have straightened to the final position Drs. Trunnell and Brummer have prescribed. You'll visit Drs. Trunnell or Brummer about once every 6 weeks to ensure that your treatment is progressing as planned. Total treatment time averages 9-15 months and the average number of aligners worn during treatment is between 18 and 30, but both will vary from case to case.
